When Paloma arrived at Second Chance Farm, she was just a shadow of a horse 29 years old, skin and bones, her ribs painfully visible, her hooves overgrown, her body sunken into the dust. She was found barely clinging to life in one of the worst neglect cases we’ve ever seen — part of a police investigation where several animals had already died on the property.
Paloma had nearly given up. She could hardly stand. She had stopped eating. Her eyes told a story of pain, abandonment, and quiet resignation.
But she was still alive.
Our team acted immediately. Dental work, X-rays, blood tests, and a tailored care plan were put in place. Slowly, carefully, we reintroduced her to nourishment with a personalized diet, created just for her by our veterinary team. We weren’t just trying to save a horse — we were trying to show her that life was still worth living.
And little by little, Paloma began to come back.
Today, she’s about 31 years old and completely blind, but don’t let that fool you she’s vibrant, strong, and full of life. She knows the rhythm of the sanctuary by heart and navigates her days with confidence, surrounded by love and peace she never knew before.
Paloma is no longer the forgotten soul in the dust.
She is a symbol of resilience, and a reminder of why we do what we do.
