Paloma

When Paloma arrived at Second Chance Farm, she was just a shadow of a horse  29 years old, skin and bones, her ribs painfully visible, her hooves overgrown, her body sunken into the dust. She was found barely clinging to life in one of the worst neglect cases we’ve ever seen — part of a police investigation where several animals had already died on the property.

Paloma had nearly given up. She could hardly stand. She had stopped eating. Her eyes told a story of pain, abandonment, and quiet resignation.

But she was still alive.

Our team acted immediately. Dental work, X-rays, blood tests, and a tailored care plan were put in place. Slowly, carefully, we reintroduced her to nourishment with a personalized diet, created just for her by our veterinary team. We weren’t just trying to save a horse — we were trying to show her that life was still worth living.

And little by little, Paloma began to come back.

Today, she’s about 31 years old and completely blind, but don’t let that fool you  she’s vibrant, strong, and full of life. She knows the rhythm of the sanctuary by heart and navigates her days with confidence, surrounded by love and peace she never knew before.

Paloma is no longer the forgotten soul in the dust.

She is a symbol of resilience, and a reminder of why we do what we do.

Before Second Chance Farm

Alfredito was born in a holding facility — a place where horses and donkeys are kept until they are transported to Mexico for slaughter. He was only 2 days old when we got him, arriving with another 10 donkeys rescued from the same place.

From the very start, Alfredito was fighting for his life. He was critically ill with salmonella and aspiration pneumonia, incredibly weak, and given less than a 10% chance of survival.

His Journey to Healing

He spent more than 13 days in the hospital, receiving life-saving treatments including blood transfusions, plasma transfusions, medications, and IV fluid therapy. Every day was a battle, but slowly, Alfredito began to show signs of improvement — and we began to see the light.

Today: A Life Full of Love

Today, Alfredito is one of the most famous rescues at Second Chance Farm, with a massive following of supporters who stood by him through it all. He’s playful, loving, and full of personality — especially when he’s spending time inside my house, where he knows he’s part of the family.

Jack’s journey to Second Chance Farm wasn’t an easy one. When he first came to us, he was a shadow of the cat he was meant to be — frail, timid, and carrying the scars of neglect. His eyes told the story of a soul who had been overlooked too many times, a life that had never been given the chance to shine.

But at Second Chance Farm, every life matters. Jack received the medical care he desperately needed, a safe place to rest, and—most importantly—unconditional love. Slowly, he began to trust again. His once-silent meows turned into the sweetest conversations, and his cautious steps became playful leaps.

Today, Jack is a thriving member of our sanctuary family. He loves basking in the sun, greeting visitors with his soft purr, and reminding us every day why second chances matter. He’s no longer the forgotten cat — he’s a symbol of resilience, healing, and the magic that happens when compassion meets action.

Jack’s story is proof that love can transform even the most fragile lives. And thanks to supporters like you, we can continue giving animals like Jack the chance they deserve.
